How to Determine When Spiritual Advice Is Solid

A spiritual teacher or confidant has the power to change the course of your entire life. The guidance they provide can help you find better answers to complicated questions and discover rewarding new epiphanies you would have never considered otherwise.

That being said, the relationship you have with your advisor makes a huge difference, as the advice of one spiritualist could differ greatly from another. Perspective is a highly subjective thing, and even when you’re tapping into energy that’s much bigger than yourself, there’s still a very human element to the experience. So how do you know if the spiritual advice you’re getting is right for the moment?

When it comes to deciding if the spiritual advice you’re receiving is solid or not, you can hold it up against a checklist of criteria that’ll enable you to verify (or further ponder) that commentary. There are several honest questions you should ask yourself during this process—from the source of this advice, to its bearing on you, to your own intuition—and they all play a role in the decision you make.

1. Who’s Giving This Advice?

If you’ve done research and concluded that the spiritualist you’re working with is grounded and reliable, this isn’t such an issue. But if you’re just getting to know someone or you’ve met them via recommendation, you may need reassurance that this is the right fit for you.

And understandably so! The character of the spiritualist you visit matters when considering their advice in the context of your life. After all, they could shape your path going forward, so it has to be genuine. This person might even be a spirit guide in disguise, a channel through which your soul—and all of its ancient wisdom—is speaking to you.

When you’re just getting to know a spiritual advisor, there are a few fundamentals to look for that will give you a good baseline for understanding what they bring to the table.

What Are Their Credentials?

First and foremost, looking at their list of qualifications paints a better picture of what to expect from this exchange, and it’s a great first step when you’re just getting your toes wet. The internet allows us to learn so much about any given individual, so you have the ability to see who your spiritual adviser really is before committing.

Do they possess adequate experience to be advising you? Have they assisted others in achieving the kind of peace and insight you’re searching for now? Is there a specific field or skill in which they’re especially gifted or certified? Has their influence been largely positive?

Reputation counts for a lot in terms of spiritual advice. Whatever training or education they’ve gone through informs their work, and knowing that background helps you determine how sound their feedback is from the get-go.

How’s Their Approach?

Beyond their credentials, the approach your adviser chooses will have a big impact on your overall experience. This is a special relationship that’s dependent on openness and trust from both sides, much like the dynamic between therapist and patient, so the techniques they use and energies they explore will need to resonate with you.

For instance, if you thrive on clear communication rather than broad or abstract ideas, you’d probably prefer that in your guide! This figure essentially functions as a bridge to the ephemeral, where they translate the universe’s plan for you and put it into words and actions. It’s your direct line to enlightenment, so no bar is too high here!

A truly competent adviser opts for a holistic approach that takes into account your mental, emotional, and physical well-being, in addition to your spiritual growth. With a solid spiritualist in your corner, their counseling will click in ways you can’t explain.

2. Is the Advice Resonating?

Once you’ve familiarized yourself with their work, it’s time to scrutinize the advice itself. It’s not as simple as accepting what seems “legit” and leaving the rest; it’s also not productive to merely focus on the aspects of advice that please you and ignore the less appealing parts. This is the trickiest step when weighing spiritual advice.

Your soul’s true purpose is like a compass urging you toward the life you’re destined to lead. The human spirit is a powerful pilot on this adventure, protecting us from harm and steering us to harmony. It’s up to us to apply this innate knowledge to arrive at that harmony.

As you contemplate the advice you’ve been given, it’s important to differentiate between what you want to hear and what resonates with you.

Are You Feeling a Connection?

If their advice is hitting all kinds of meaningful and vulnerable places, it’s tough to deny your connection with this spiritualist. There has to be some alignment of your values with theirs, so you can expect some crossover that connects you to each other. This makes for a deep bond that’ll transform your reality as well as your spirituality.

Simultaneously, you’ll recognize this connection cognitively, both instantly and eventually. Subtle synchronicities often accompany what’s meant for us in this realm. A coincidence is rarely ever just that—it very well may be something bigger. Having a good feeling in your first session is heartening, and probably means the advice you’re getting bears some spiritual weight.

Is It Relevant to You?

The relevance of their advice adds an extra layer of faith to the equation. If they’ve said something that touches on your innermost fears, hopes, insecurities, loves, or concerns, it could draw your attention to areas of your life you didn’t realize were calling to you.

Alternatively, you might be told something that feels way out of leftfield, but don’t discredit that advice on a whim. Divine intuition occurs when we most need it to, righting the ship and filling our sails to deliver us to those destinations that we’re intended to reach. These are the instances where that illuminated intuition will intervene to show us the way.

3. What Does Your Intuition Say?

Finally, I encourage you to find a moment to reflect and tune into your own soul’s messaging. Spiritual advice from without is one thing, but the soul-led guidance you receive from within is another. It’s your most valuable ally.

How are you feeling about it all? Are you noticing certain signs? Is this relationship offering you the clarity you were craving? Conduct this inventory with yourself in order to welcome that truly sage advice into your life.

And it’s okay if your intuition isn’t always 100% correct—no one’s is! Setting that perfectionist standard for yourself only discourages you from trying to intuit the world for your benefit. Recenter yourself and discover what you can do with a solid intuitive foundation.

Trust Your Gut (and Your Spiritualist)

You might have caught onto a consistent undercurrent throughout these steps: the task of actively intuiting your situation to determine whether or not the spiritual advice you’re being given is applicable to you.

In my work as a master intuitive reader, I listen to my heart when counseling my clients and teaching my students, and I take the time to regularly check in with myself and solidify our foundation. With dedicated practice, your instincts will become quick enough to discern what your soul needs from outside input.

The earthly impact of spiritual advice is immeasurable, so you must create your own barometer based on the ethos of your adviser, the substance of that advice, and the direction your intuition takes you. Further that intuition for a stronger grasp on which bits of spiritual guidance are solid and which don’t hold water.
