How to Stop Worrying
Confession, my friend. For a very long time, I thought I was immune to worry. Seriously, my clients would come to me with anxiety issues, and I always thought, “I wonder what that feels like.” As if I was too zen or too spiritual to deal with some human emotions. And then the universe slapped me in the face.
Turns out, I’ve always been a worrier. I just was never so self-aware in that regards like my clients were.
My husband loves me, and he’ll let me flip the F out for a while without saying anything. But finally, one day, he had to put an end to the madness. “Nikki, I know you better than you know yourself. You need to stop with the worrying,” he begged.
I knew something was blocking me from seeing my path’s steps, but I had no idea the block was my worrying. Damn, blocks. Anyhow, for me, when I’m ready to work through a block, I first need to understand it. So, I decided to breakdown worry for both you and me.
The first question I asked was, “Why do we worry?” Answer: Because we think we’re being proactive by running an endless amount of thoughts through our minds. We think we can control the situation, by thinking our way through what may or may not happen. We believe that the business will help the situation.
Now that I understood the purpose of my worry, the next question I asked was, “What’s the opposite of worry?” What I got was: space and trust. When I worry, what I crave the most is space. All I want are a few unscheduled hours to figure it out. But often, lack of time is my biggest worry!
Interesting enough, we don’t need time to create space. The space we seek in space in our minds. As in, no crazy thoughts, just for a little bit, please. That’s what we want. And that’s how you create space.
In space, is where we are able to hear intuition and our inner voice, which is where we get heart-driven answers that solve our worries. The mind will not provide that.
And lastly, to really stop the worry, we have to bring in trust. Because a quick hit of space is not always enough. But as we commit to less crazy thoughts and focus more on our inner voice, we can trust that we will soon hear the solution.
