How to Use Chakras to Identify Your Blocks

Chances are, if you’ve taken a class with me, or done a beginners yoga class, you’ve heard the word chakra used more than once. Chakras are the seven wheels of energy that reside in your body from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. When your chakras are aligned, energy is free-flowing.

We can also use chakras to identify spiritual blocks. So if you’re trying to manifest the ultimate relationship, you have to clear out the heart chakra to let the love flow freely. Let’s go through each chakra and see which blocks are bugging you. Read on for more! 


The 7 Chakras and What They Mean

  1. Root Chakra - Your root chakra is your first chakra, or your foundation chakra, and is associated with the base of your spine. It’s also connected to whatever you use to ground yourself, including basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and safety, as well as your more emotional needs, such as letting go of fear and feeling safe. When your root chakra is blocked, you may feel anxiety and fear. Physically, the root chakra is associated with the colon, the bladder, with elimination, or with lower back, leg, or feet issues.

  2. The Sacral Chakra - This chakra, which is located above the pubic bone, is responsible for our sexual and creative energies. When it’s blocked, you may sense some sexual dysfunction or feel uninspired. When this chakra is open, you’re feeling friendly, passionate, and successfully fulfilled while also eliciting feelings of wellness, abundance, pleasure, and joy. If this chakra feels blocked, look into ways to open it up! Consider a dance class, or getting in tune with the things that make you feel joyful or inspired. If it makes you feel passionate, follow that lead!

  3. The Solar Plexus Chakra - The Solar Plexus Chakra, or third chakra, rules over our self-esteem, our ability to commit, and our willpower. Physically, it rules over all things stomach-related. When this chakra is blocked you can suffer from low self-esteem in ways that make you react to the world with apathy—you’re probably known for your ability to procrastinate, sometimes not even getting things done. 

  4. The Heart Chakra - Finally, my favorite chakra! As the name implies, this chakra is all about love. A closed heart chakra can give way to grief, anger, jealousy, fear of betrayal, and hatred toward yourself and others—especially in the form of holding a grudge against something or someone. Ouch. Find ways to open the heart chakra to let go of negative feelings and open yourself up to love! I offer a free heart-cleansing meditation, if you want to get started right away. I highly suggest attending to this one sooner rather than later - way too many important things spring forth from the heart (just sayin’).

  5. Throat Chakra - Speak your inner truth with the throat chakra! If you find you have trouble speaking your inner truth, and you find it hard to pay attention and stay focused, then this chakra may be blocked. Physically, this blockage can manifest itself as a sore throat, thyroid issues, neck and shoulder stiffness, or tension headaches.

  6. Third-Eye Chakra - The third eye chakra is another favorite of mine! It has to do with intuition! If you have trouble with intuition or feel like you can’t trust your inner voice this chakra may be blocked! An unbalanced third-eye chakra can manifest in making you more judgemental, dismissive, or introverted. If the rest of your chakras are out of whack, this one is most likely blocked as well. For help with this block, start by reading this article for 3 easy ways to access your intuition.

  7. The Crown Chakra - This chakra governs our spiritual connection to our higher selves. When aligned, the realizations that come to you make you feel bigger than yourself yet very much a part of the universe. If you feel isolated, distressed, or disconnected, your crown chakra may be blocked. This chakra is opened during certain yogi or meditative practices, so it’s not a skill or technique you can call on at any moment. Once you’re further along your spiritual journey, you may be able to experience the opening of this chakra.
