How to Cleanse Your Heart Chakra

Ah the heart chakra, my favorite chakra. Why? Because when we are operating from a place of love with a clear heart, everything in life runs more smoothly. Our relationships, our careers, our self esteem, the whole sha-bang. However, as humans and naturally sensitive beings, it is one of the easiest chakras to become blocked. You may need a cleanse if you are struggling with self love, feel hopeless in the dating department, or are afraid to let your creation out into the world.

During my one-on-one readings, I help many of my clients cleanse this chakra but today, I want to teach you how to do it yourself for those times when you need a solution asap.

1. Feel Your Feelings

One of the main reasons that our heart chakra gets blocked is because we aren't allowing ourselves to truly feel. We bottle up our emotions in an effort to protect ourselves. Or we judge our feelings, thinking that the dark ones — like jealousy, fear, hate, and so on — are bad. When really, all feelings are useful. They are our inner compass. When we feel stuck and aren’t sure where to go, our feelings give us the clues we’re looking for. Once we know how we feel, we can start working on the belief that produced the feeling.

Sadly, many of us don’t know how to feel our feelings. We typically have two modes: the hold it all in mode and the explosion mode. We avoid feeling them because we don’t want to go into explosion, but explosion only happens when we don’t express feelings in a timely matter.

We all have our preferences when it comes to expression. If you’re not sure what yours is, think back to when you were a kid. Did you write notes to friends when you were mad? My parents have a note I wrote to them at age six (in black crayon for extra drama) when I was angry at them. It ain’t much different these days!

Some of us express through talk, dance, music, and so on. Explore some outlets and get it out, girl.

2. Forgive

This is a tough one, I know, but forgiveness is a necessary step in healing your own heart. Forgiveness does not happen overnight. But there really is no greater way to realize your own personal power than to forgive those who you believe stole it from you. The truth is, no one can steal the brilliance that is within you. No one. Blame is a form of fear. It’s a distraction that buys us time from stepping into our own greatness. It’s important to note that forgiving does not mean you need to forget. And it does not mean that the person was not in the wrong. Humans commit very awful, malicious acts. We are not discounting this truth. It also does not mean you should continue spending time with this person or be around them. Forgiving those who have hurt us is really a commitment we make to ourselves. Through forgiveness we are free of the limitations we have set on ourselves because of the experience we had with this person. You are not taking this action as a courtesy to them. You are forgiving for yourself.

3. Gratitude

Often times, the pain in our heart stems from not being present. We are upset over the past or worried about the future. Both of which, weigh on the heart and are not effective. The simple tool of gratitude instantly connects us to the present moment because we are reminded of everything we have to be grateful for right now. Try starting and ending your day by writing down at least one thing that you are grateful for. I like to keep these in a designated journal and reflect on all of the entries at the end of the month. It really helps to open your eyes and heart to how beautiful your life already is.

4. Meditation

Meditation is one of my favorite tools for cleansing the chakras. Similar to gratitude, it allows you to connect with the present moment and offers a sense of calm in a world that can often feel chaotic.
